How to Choose a Goldendoodle Puppy

So, you've decided a goldendoodle puppy is right for you and your family. Wonderful! Now you're faced with the daunting task of deciding which one. Never fear! We're here to help you find the perfect friend.

So many people approach the decision of what puppy to get focusing on aesthetic factors. Is the fur curly enough? Does the puppy have the colors I want? But so much more important than how the puppy looks is whether or not the personality of a pup is a good fit with you. We have yet to meet a goldendoodle puppy who wasn't completely adorable. Now we need to match one of these bundles of perfection with their perfect human. How do we do that?

How To Choose a Puppy Using Personality Testing

Maybe this is too obvious, but puppy personality testing helps us understand the puppy’s personality. It seems way too simply, but understanding how each puppy responds to the world around them is massively important in getting them to the right families. By observing how they respond to new stimuli and situations, an experienced breeder can determine which kinds of environments will help a given puppy to thrive.

If you’ve chosen DoodleBrood as your breeder, we couldn’t be more thankful, or more proud, that you’ve trusted us with such a responsibility. And we want to do everything we can to ensure your puppy is an ideal match for you and your home.

Personality-matched puppies have the greatest chances for a successful placement. The most common reason that puppies are surrendered at shelters are behavioral issues, and these most frequently result from poor breeding and rearing practices, or from being placed in a poorly matched home. You can read about how we breed and raise our pups for success here, and since those issues have already been taken care of, we now want to make sure each puppy is matched to the perfect home.

Choosing a Puppy for Life

As we mentioned above, placing a pup in a perfectly matched home helps to reduce the chance of a pup being returned to us or surrendered to a shelter. When we take the time to learn what makes each puppy tick, taking into account their energy, experiences, and the family each pup will go to, we can greatly increase the likelihood that both pup and their new owner will have a long, happy life together.

While there are a number of different methods used to evaluate a puppy and their personality, at DoodleBrood we commonly use the Volhard Puppy Aptitude Test. This evaluation looks at how a puppy reacts to a number of stimuli, focusing on play, socializing, and being on their own. We also expose them to different sights, sounds and smells. All of these evaluations are taken together to give us a full picture of the puppy and what makes them tick.
